What's On

NEW – NEW – NEW – NEW – NEW – NEW - NEW

From 3. - 14 November 2010, I will exhibit at the AR't Herisau together with 7 other artists. Apart from textile art like felt and paper there will also be artwork made of wire as well as jewellery. The opening ceremony will be at the 3rd of November.
The address: Altes Zeughaus, Poststrasse 13, Herisau

Solo exhibition at the 4th International Quiltfesitval in Wilwerwiltz, Luxemburg
From 13.- 16.05.2010 I exhibited those works that were created between 2008 and 2010.

On this occasion I presented my second catalogue. Nearly all the works are inspired by nature. Hand dyed fabrics and digitally processed photos are mainly the basis for the layered, hand embroidered and machine stitched works. The processed materials like tyvek, felt, plastic or plant material give the works a lively appearance.

11.10.2008
Now that the exhibition in Val d’Argent is over, I am redesigning my homepage. The photos of the works that were exposed in the Church in Lièpfre are now in my Gallery "Nature".

18th-21st September 2008:
14th European Patchwork Meeting in Val d’Argent, Alsace (F)
My works will be shown in the Church de l’Assomption in Lièpfre together with those of Gabrielle Paquin (F) and Gerlinde Merl (A). The majority of my works have never been shown elsewhere – not even on my website. So come along and enjoy.

Quilt Judging Course:
This course that started 2006 will be over at the end of October 2008. I passed the oral exam at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham last August. Now the judgement of the chosen quilts has to be thoroughly justified in writing.

The year 2007 in retrospect:

- In June, I took over the position of the editor of patCHquilt’s quarterly magazine, which is fun though challenging and time consuming. Socializing with quilters at shows and interviewing artists is very rewarding. Finding the correct language to express my response to what I have seen and searching for interesting topics is also quite a task.

- The “Quilt Judging Course” of the British Quilters’ Guild is progressing. So far I have done three modules. The first two modules had nothing to do with textiles: We were called on to investigate any material except for textiles, find artists that work in the chosen field and judge their works. I chose paper cuttings and found a surprisingly amount of modern artists in this otherwise so traditional field. For the second module we had to discuss any art work for which I chose the early works of Jasper Johns. Only after finishing these two modules could we finally deal with quilts. “Tools and Techniques” was the first subject. For the module due at the end of March 2008 we are required to investigate materials used both in traditional and art quilts.

- In August, I was awarded Swiss Winner of the British Guild’s Challenge at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham.

- In October, I took the opportunity to organize a solo exhibition in my studio along with the “Röstigraben-Challenge” exhibition of patCHquilt that was held in the same building in which my studio is situated.

- Some of my works were discussed in the following publications:
- Britta Ankenbauer: “Digitale Bilderwelt in der Quiltkunst“ (Digital Images in Art Quilts), patCHquilt Bulletin Nr. 75
- Cyndy Lyle Rymer with Lynn Koolish: “Innovative Fabric Imagery for Quilts
- Must-Have Guide to Transforming & Printing Your Favorite Images on Fabric”, Lafayette, CA, USA, 2007 http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=1144

The latter is the result of a call for entries for a new book and a special exhibit on Innovative Imagery by C&T Publishing at the Fall 2007 International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston. The first part of the book deals with tools and techniques for digital quilt making. Thirteen illustrated projects of different artists with step-by-step instructions and inspiring digital techniques are discussed in detail. The last section of the book is dedicated to a gallery of more than 40 entries selected for the Innovative Fabric Imagery special exhibit in Houston. My piece “Burmese Days 2” is presented together with the three photos with which the quilt was constructed.

- My homepage was presented in the “Patchwork Gilde, Germany”, Nr. 89 with the following text:
“On Grietje van der Veen’s very well designed website one can learn about the extraordinary career of this quilter. In the galleries you find art quilts, small works, miniatures, and works inspired by nature. The photos can be enlarged by clicking on the thumbnails. In many of the small works she likes to play with yarn. I am especially impressed by the green-blue “Deep Sea” seen in the gallery “Small Works”. By the way, Grietje van der Veen is editor of the Swiss Guild’s member magazine.“

- I was asked to hold a solo exhibition at the 14th European Patchwork Meeting from 18th-21st September 2008 in Ste Marie aux Mines, Alsace, France. I am meant to show at least 15 works executed in the yeas 2007 and 2008. This means a lot of work for the next couple of months so I decided to stop giving workshops till October 2008 in spite of the fact that I enjoy teaching very much.
